Some Anecdotal Experience With Columbia One Step Disinfectant

The F. C. Sturtevant Company produces a quaternary ammonium disinfectant with an excellent spectrum called One Step. This product comes pre diluted, eliminating waste and ineffectiveness from improper dilution. One Step claims activity against canine parvovirus and human tuberculosis, giving it enormous scope. It is also effective in 5% soil environment, setting it apart from most other commercial disinfectants available to veterinarians.

Because of its ese of use and wide range of efficacy, it seems ideal for mission critical areas of an animal hospital. Our hospital has a critical care and surgical emphasis, putting us at risk of highly resistant bacteria. We have been using a bleach solution for disinfectant, as we have cultured nosocomial organisms from cages and runs disinfected with most of the available disinfectant products that are safe for use in an animal hospital environment. We are still testing One Step in this environment and are pleased with the results. The scent is pleasant and less disturbing the dilute bleach, but I would still use any disinfectant with reasonable ventilation.

One Step comes with a rugged sprayer that is reusable and will hold up in the hospital environment. This package makes One Step an excellent package for dispensing to clients. Owners seeking a disinfectant for home use can buy One Step from their veterinarian.

The product would be excellent for breeders and kennel/cattery owners. One Step would be valuable in any animal facility that needs an easy to use, safe, and broad-spectrum disinfectant. These include animal shelters/pounds, boarding kennels, grooming shops, stables, show rings, wildlife rehabilitation shelters, educational facilities, and any other that houses animals.
